Access & Safety

Services to support access and safety in Purley

UPDATE: Draft Wayfinding audit download

We’ve found that the biggest and most common issues facing almost all district centres across the UK is access and safety.
With an increasing population it is almost inevitable that more issues will arise. For the next-term, a key focus will be to make sure that Purley is a safe place to visit and ease of access for all.

Here’s an overview of just some of the access projects Purley BID has delivered in the last 5 years and future plans

  • Reduced the parking fines issued on the High Street
  • Increased free parking time in Purley Town Centre up to 1 hour
  • Successfully lobbied for the council to invest £200,000 into making improvements to the multi-storey car park. including: repaired lifts, fixed security cameras, signage, painting and cleaning

Current accessibility projects

  • Wayfinding facilities – to improve signage in the town.
  • Improved signage especially to car parks as part of the way finding facilities.
  • Purley BID is also working closely with all parties to ensure that the ‘pinch point’ at Purley Cross traffic lights from Russell Hill Road will be resolved. In discussions with the GLA, TFL and the developers, Purley BID has pushed for the option to straighten this junction as Mosaic Place is developed.

Safety

Purley is not considered a particularly unsafe or violent area but we have our instances of anti-social behaviour, homelessness and theft. The residents of Purley require a high level of safety, both during daytime but particularly at night.

Visitors should see that the business community cares and is making Purley a pleasant place, with some key initiatives from the Purley BID team:

  • Launched the Croydon Business Crime Reduction Partnership Scheme in Purley
  • Working closely with the Croydon Neighbouring team to deal with anti-social behaviour and homelessness
  • Ensured better Car Park Lighting in the Multi-Storey where the public currently feels uncomfortable and see improved lighting as a considerable benefit. Lifts have also been fixed
  • Pub watch, and Retail security, to help prevent trouble around shops, pubs and dining
  • Improved surveillance and communication channels between local businesses
